WATERFORD SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND.
Firstly I must say it is nice to talk a small bit of hurling again. The All Ireland final was something else and even the stupidity and childish remarks of Davy Fitz in the post match interview didn’t even take from the whole spectacle. Davy just didn’t need to go on with the usual rubbish and his antics in front of the camera leave a lot to be desired. Why does he look away from the interviewer all the time ? It shows a lack of respect and he doesn’t need to be at this type of behaviour especially seeing as he is doing a half decent job with this brilliant young Clare team that he inherited from successive good underage management set ups before him.
I think Davy will need to calm down now and concentrate on the job in hand. He looked under pressure in that interview and subsequent ones later in the week. Jimmy Barry Murphy on the other hand seeems at ease with the whole lot and I am starting to think that Cork will win the replay.
Speaking of the replay ,it simply beggars belief that the Ladies Football was not moved to accommodate the hurling final. No offence to the ladies but even they know and understand they should have made way. The ladies final will attract a small attendance and a minuscule television audience. In truth. if there is any other sport on tv that day be it a soccer match ,golf, tennis ,horse racing or whatever then that is what most people will be watching. This is no criticism of the ladies game but is just telling it as it is. I will defend the ladies against the type of criticism that has been levelled at them by some in the media regarding the making of tea and sandwiches etc, that type of old sexist comment has no place in the debate.
De La Salle v Ballygunner .
I am off to see this mouthwatering quarter final. What a game is in prospect ? Will the mighty Mullane be playing and if so how long will he last with that injury? Daniels is a huge loss to this team after his unfortunate injury in a meaningless friendly against Offaly earlier in the season. Ian Flynn was also a doubt. De La Salle have been beating everybody in sight up to now, including us, but that counts for nothing now in this knockout game.
Ballygunner are hitting form at the correct time. Will Hutchinson be back from injury. Will David O’ Sullivan be back to his best ? He is a brilliant all round player and should be in the Waterford set up. Many people were writing the Ballygunner obituary earlier on this year [ not me] and they will be very dangerous today. Tactics and player fitness are going to decide this one. I don’t want to give too much away but the tactics that Ballygunner employ best are a direct opposite to the De La Salle ones. I would love to go into them [tactics] but I cannot because of our pending game against a high class Abbeyside team tomorrow.
I think this game will go down to the wire and the bookmakers have the betting wrong. De La Salle 2/5 and Ballygunner 9/4. It is way closer than that.
