CHELTENHAM 2014 EARLY PREVIEW
Hello there . Have been away from the site for a long while due to pressures . Obviously a huge amount has happened in the meantime.
It was great to see IRVING win his two races over hurdles since our combined purchase of him from Germany. Tom Malone and Philipp Stauffenberg are terrific people to work with. I hope the rest of the new recruits will do as well . They include the likes of TAHIRA, LOCHNAGAR and NEXIUS amongst others and will be out in the near future. I will try to keep you informed.
Coolfighter is now handicapped after three nice runs over hurdles and basically he should be well up to winning for Tony Mullins. The very exciting ERLKONIG and to a lesser extent POSTILLION have also arrived recently for us at Tony*s yard.
I hope all the above will go on to prove successful and especially as they have all come from Germany.
I have sent the first two offspring of my favourite mare BLUEBERRY TART away for breaking and they are going well. I am also happy to report I was able to buy back the full brother to the ill fated Fourmilewater and he is in work and about to turn four and showing us a fair bit of ability.
I think the following a worth an ante post interest for Chelteham.
Supreme Novices :
I obviously hope for our sake that Irving will turn up with a big chance on the day (currently 16-1) but I am advising a one point win on two horses trained by Willie Mullins. MOYLE PARK and VAUTOUR. The former is unbeaten in two bumpers and a maiden hurdle and has posted big numbers in those. He might end up in the Neptune but we will take our chance. VAUTOUR is a French recruit to the powerful Mullins operation and absolutely hosed up on his recent Irish debut. He looked awesome and showed he has all the qualities to go to the top. It is interesting and significant that the greatest exponent of speed ratings and indeed all round handicapping in the world today, Nick Mordin has awarded huge figures to both of these horses. I suggest a 1 point win on VAUTOUR at 20~1 with Boylesports and others and 1 point win on MOYLE PARK at 16~1 with PP.
Arkle Chase :
Nick Mordin again leads the way here with the monstrous figures he has attributed to FELIX YONGER in the two novice chases which this horse has won with any amount in hand this season. I concur. Again it is a Mullins produce, Tony buying as a young horse before selling to Graham Wylie and Willie. I have rarely seen a novice jump with such alacrity and precision and has blinding speed to boot. This fellow has it all. Stan James are there at 14~1. Hurt them with a 2 points win at that crazy price. Nap.
Gold Cup :
It was great to see CUE CARD once again show what he is capable of when storming away with the Betfair Chase and I hope some of you backed him going on what I said about him for the past couple of years. I don*t need to say much more about him other than he can win the Gold Cup. He is currently 7 to one freely. 1 pt win.
Just a note on the football and hurling. Everybody it seems wants Arsenal not to win the Premiership. I hope they do it but fear they will not if they do not beef up the midfield and indeed replace Gibbs at full back. I am wary of Arteta as a winner. He reminds of a slightly better version of Lverpool’s Lucas who of course is nowhere near good enough to be part of a Premiership winning outfit. So Arsene Wenger . buy a strong forward thinking midfielder who can tackle properly, pass and make forward runs and also immediately purchase a left full.
I really like what Martinez is doing at Everton. He is not afraid to win, it is not impossible that they could go on to win the league. He now has the perfect blend nearly all over the park and it is no wonder that they dominate possession no matter who the opposition. The McCarthy and Barkley axis is the best in the Premiership and when you think that Trapattoni deemed the genial Irishman not good enough well it just makes you mad with anger.
That brings me on to Liam Brady. His continued petulance and semi hatred for Roy Keane has surfaced again after the brilliant Keane and Vieira documentary the other night. What is it with Brady ? He backed the out of touch Trap when even the usual silly mob had eventually seen the light and then publicly stated that Keane was not a good choice for the Irish job with O’Neill without backing up his argument. He was almost alone in that except for the usual Vincent Hogan types. To compound his initial mistake, Brady could not resist having a go when Bill brought up the subject of Fergie’s childish attack on the great Corkman after the Champions League coverage Wed night on RTE. Time to get off the stage Liam, you seem bitter for some reason, you were a great footballer but have gone down a strange road since backing Trap and lashing out at anyone who dared question his crazy approach and seem now intent on trying to knock probably our greatest ever. It is sad.
On the hurling front I am really looking forward to the new Waterford set up. It seems a very professional management team with some top class people in charge. I hope they can get us back to where we were and indeed bring us all the way. A lot of players that were not involved recently will hopefully come back in and with the likes of the under used Barry Coughlan and David O’ Sullivan to name but a few the future is bright. We were used to going to Croke Park nearly every year up to recently and that is where we should be so let us kick on now.
I am up about 15 points for the interrupted campaign but will double check and update later.
