DONCASTER FRIDAY. HUGHES GIVES A TUTORIAL ON THE PUPIL.
Yesterday was ok so plus just under 10 pts starting today. Maureen has not trained on so never again for her while The Lark won as she should.
Richard Hughes gave a lesson on race riding aboard The Pupil in the mile maiden. Any young jockeys that want to see the art of race riding should go on to the Attheraces website and watch this contest over and over again. Hughes gave another masterclass, immediately settling his mount in last and giving the animal confidence. Always travelling on the correct lead as the race unfolded in front of him ,Hughes brought his horse into the race very gradually before switching his lead once more, filling The Pupil with a gulp of air and thrusting home with a withering final furlong burst. Pure poetry in motion. It might have been an ordinary maiden at a big meeting that went mostly unnoticed but not for me. Hughes brought his full repertoire of skills to the table for this one and showed once again that he has no equal in the modern game.
Doncaster 1 40 : The aforementioned Richard Hughes can hopefully start us off on a good note by steering THUNDER STRIKE to victory in this speed test. I think there is more to come from this horse and while he really needs further the ferocious early fractions can allow him get into it late and hopefully get up. He is 9/2 freely with most layers so a 1 pt win at that.
Doncaster 2 10 : Hughes is again my choice in this excellent staying handicap on PETHER’S MOON. The big question here is whether this really nice looking son of Dylan Thomas will get the trip on this softer ground ? Connections obviously think he will so I suppose that should be good enough for us. It is worth taking a chance at decent odds that this will be a rare long distance winner for Hannon. Two non runners just in so 1 pt win at the 100/30 with PP. I think he will drift so shop around.
Doncaster 2 40 : The bet of the day is TIMES UP. Ideally he would prefer faster ground and I hope we don’t get any more rain. He won this last year and has been trained with this in mind all year. Ryan Moore will have to be at his strongest to make sure he settles as he can be keen early . This aside, everything should go smoothly. I was really worried about only danger High Jinks at the five day stage but then I noticed the application of a first time tongue tie on him. This is never a good sign on an older horse and especially when that animal is by High Chaparral. They are screaming to us that this horse has developed a problem and while of course he can win being fresh off a break and is a classy horse that is hailing from an in form yard that tongue tie does it for me. TIMES UP is a nap so a 2 pts win at 9/4 with pp.
