ASCOT CHASE THIS SATURDAY

3 50 Ascot Saturday . On my earlier blog I mentioned whether or not connections were going to run Cue Card in this race. They have signalled their intention to run and I am surprised as he is not as effective on the forecast soft to heavy going and surely a slog at this stage so close to the festival is hardly ideal if in fact not downright silly. He ran stones below par in my opinion on similar going in the King George. All that said I think the world of him and expect him to dot up if he turns up here. In defence of his only lifetime poor performance in that race it could be that he was a sick horse as the stable were very quiet during this period.

Cue Card’s form stands up to the closest scrutiny. The young seven year old has won half of his fourteen starts and if you count fourth at the festival as a place and excusing an unship he was placed in all the rest with the exception being his below par run in the Christmas highlight. This is serious stuff. On one of those defeats he was mugged on the line by ace robber Bobs Worth who only got up because Cue Card ran green and idled.

For such a well known horse he is totally unexposed as a chaser and some of his big runs are truly awesome. On another defeat in the Arkle last year you will note that he was actually closing down the distance on Sprinter Sacre on the run to the line. His Exeter re-appearance this season should be looked at on the Sporting Life website again to try and fully understand what I am talking about regarding the brilliance of this horse. His jumping was breathtaking , the way he measured his stride on the approaches and the alacrity and precision of his leaps over the fences will remain with me for some time. Surely only a high class animal can produce such a performance.

The bookmakers have him at a monstrous 3/1 for Saturday . They favour Captain Chris and the current Champion Chaser Finians Rainbow over him. I have to rate CUE CARD as one of my biggest ever bets . I think he will slaughter them.

This is an ante post race so if we back now and he doesn’t run we will lose our stake so wait till declaration time for the final advice and let’s pray for a bit of dry weather also.

Regards,

Fourmile.
