SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 8

Plus 191 points.

I keep mentioning how tough a game this horseracing business  is and we got yet more conformation of this on Thursday with my own horse Fourmilewater. It is difficult to know where to start describing the disasters that befell this really nice horse but the misfortune happened just after leaving the parade ring as they cantered up the hill. I alluded to the fact on Thursday’s blog about how big and strong this fellow is and he looked to  unceremoniously dump his jockey but in actual fact Stephen Gray was the first to admit he actually more or less fell off.

The horse ran  loose [ not too bad] and did almost the full circuit of the track before being caught at the stable entrance. Stephen bought him back to the start in a swinging canter rather than trotting him, this only exacerbated an already lost cause. Incredibly, the stewards deemed him fit to race . The horse and his young jockey were both visibly upset and  missed the break when they jumped off but with Fourmilewater now revved up Stephen could not hold him and in the first 3 furlongs he passed 16 horses to go prominent joining the leader. He stayed there for another mile until further disaster struck with the bit now starting to slide through his mouth until at the top of the hill on 6 f from home it eventually went  through his mouth and he had to be basically pulled up.

I inspected him in the unsaddling area after the race and after all his exertions he was sound and  hardly blowing, in fact he was fresh as a daisy. This would be unusual for a horse that looked to expend so much energy while a catalogue of disasters were taking place.

We live to fight another day and the worry now I suppose is  whether it will leave a mental scare , I hope not. Listowel is next stop .

TODAY’S RACING.

Simply the best racing in quiet a while  today so let’s quickly go through the selections.

Haydock 1 45 . AL WAAB 6/4, powerful sort ,will stay extra furlong , should dominate these . 2 pts win.

Haydock 2 50, CHILL THE KITE , 9/2, tipped and wrote this fellow up before and I think he can strike late on , progressive and improving and is well backed already , 1 pt win .

Haydock 4 00, SIR GRAHAM WADE  6/1, Always forgive a horse one bad run, especially at York, I think the world of this horse as you know and even  in an  ultra competitive event and as usual ,badly drawn I am advising a 2 pts win at 6/1.

Ascot 4 15 , This is the race of the day with any amount of ludicrously talented staying 3 year olds lining up. It’s a veritable feast of up and coming horses. I take SUN CENTRAL 6/1 to defy terrible terrible outside draw to win in a finish of necks and heads from stable companion Stencive , Gospel Choir and any amount of other late closers in outstanding event. The triumph hurdle winner is in here somewhere. 1 pt win Sun Central 6/1.

Kempton 2 30, MODUN 7/2, He can upset fav Dandino in another fascinating heat. 1 pt win Modun at well backed 7/2.

Kempton 3 05 ,ROYAL EMPIRE 2/1. Improving 3 y old towers over these, 2 pts win at well backed 2/1 .

Kempton 3 35, CELLIST 9/1 , big strong bugger who takes a lot of winding up bu I  can take the pain of a slow death with the prospect of a 9/1 payout. 1pt win 9/1

Kempton 4 10, PEARL ACCLAIM 4/1, can get back on trail after poor run last time, classy. 1 pt win 4/1 .

Kempton 4 45, NAVE 7/1, This lad on losing run but is showing distinct signs of being ready to strike, sliding down the handicap and today might be the day, 1 pt win 7/1 .
Thirsk 4 05,  NOBLE ALAN 16/1, topweight and best known as hurdler/chaser ,I think he can do this, best fresh off strong gallop on long home straight and what a price, 1 pt win 16/1.

Leopardstown 4 40, DUNTLE 9/2, fast improver , well drawn, will love conditions, races prominently, not great renewal, she is on fast upward curve, get in there , 1 pt win Duntle 9/2.

Leopardstown ,5 45, ST NICHOLAS ABBEY. Has huge turn of foot on tight tracks round a bend on fast ground with shortish homestraight and has perfect conditions here. I really rate Nathanial as well so 2 pts win St Nicholas Abbey without the favourite with Paddy Power at 15/8.

Footnote :We [ Fourmilewater] play our do or die knock out quarter final versus Abbeyside this evening , I hope the bookmkers are right , massive match in prospect. Best of luck lads……

Regards,

Fourmileracing.
